Oklahoma’s Rockabilly Pioneer Makes Rock HOF

Oklahoma native, Wanda Jackson, is among the latest inductees into the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame. She joins fellow musicians Metallica, Run-DMC, Jeff Beck, Bobby Womack and Little Anthony and the Imperials in the Class of 2009.

Wanda was the first girl to rock out. She'd later get mixed up in a crazy romantic relationship with fellow rocker, Elvis (hubba-hubba)! If Elvis is the King, Wanda should be the Queen...with all due respect to Aretha Franklin.

I had a chance to meet Wanda a few years ago while we were performing at the Oklahoma Country Music Hall of Fame in Del City. The late great Bob Wood put the whole thing together and Wanda was the headliner. We were all star struck. Even though she was dealing with an awful sore throat and a bad cold, she belted out her rockabilly classics with power and conviction. Not to mention, she was still hotter than a firecracker. Just a beautiful woman, inside and out.

Congrats, Wanda!

Just a few weeks ago, Wanda's husband was in the hospital here in OKC. My wife spent a couple days on the team taking care of him. She told me that on the first day Ms Jackson, naturally being tired and worried, looked the part. No one (except my wife) seemed to have any idea who she was. Her husband improved, however, and the next day Wanda showed up looking like a million bucks. She is still an attractive and classy lady.

My wife's mother used to crank up Wanda's albums, hence the familiarity. She never told Wanda she knew who she was -- figured Ms Jackson had enough on her plate without the distraction. Still, I'm glad that she's being inducted and that she knows she's still remembered and admired.

Here's an e-mail (stacy.barton@citcomm.com) update on the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame protest letter from BOBBLEHEAD, Dana, from Stillwater:

Good Morning Stacy~

I know my LETTER or should I say my book is taking so long, but I thought this time around I would make a notebook, with each page that is created, will be neatly slipped inside a sheet protector. I want the R&RHF to understand that people have lived their lives around music and have spent
tons of money in doing so.

We the people have made someone popular by paying attention to them in admiration for their gifted talents. I am not upset that Metallica got into the R&RHF, but it would have been nice if they had inducted one of their mentors with them, like Alice Cooper or Deep Purple.

I'm so very happy that they FINALLY got around to Wanda Jackson. Their heads must be deep inside a sand hole. What worries me is that they are leaving out a very important generation of music that you and I grew up with. Where
is Paul Revere and the Raiders, Grassroots, Three Dog Night, Steppenwolf, The Monkees, The Turtles, The Zombies, And where is "Chicago"!!!!!

When I saw Chicago for the first time in 1970 with my Mon and Dad, they had an experimental rock sound. Everybody loves Chicago, but for some odd reason they don't get recognized for their accomplishments. They are one of the first bands to include a
"horn section" in their music. Just like Jethro Tull included "wind" instruments.

Now that they have inducted
"Jeff Beck" , that makes me want to do a page on guitarists that need to be thought of in the future. Where is Frampton? Time keeps ticking away which make bands that started in the eighties more likely to get in. Which in
turn makes them keep leaving out the bands that started it all in the first place.

So let me work harder on my BOOK and this time I'm sending it Federal Express and it will need to be signed for. I'm going to blow Jan and Ms.Evans minds with a notebook that will tell a story to them through a "rock groupie" set of eyes and mind.

I love your morning show so much! You are a pro at your line of
work and I admire you so much for that.

Hugs and Respect Always~

Dana from Stillwater
